Additional information

Sarah Emanuel, an adored family matriarch, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2025, approaching the age of 103. She maintained mental clarity and an amazing determination to continue spending time with family and friends until the end.

Born May 24, 1922, Sarah devoted herself to her family. Her moral compass, nurturing spirit, and unwavering dedication to her children, grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren set a powerful example that will be an inspiration for generations to come.

Sarah and her late husband Norman Emanuel were married for nearly 60 years. Sarah was ahead of her time as she and Norman were partners in life and in business, working side by side in the Chicago retail furniture industry. She showed exemplary confidence and strength that defied traditional expectations for women at that time, taking evening classes at Northwestern University in addition to working full-time.

Sarah’s romance with Norman started when Sarah’s father hired Norman to work in the family furniture store, which led to Norman marrying the boss’s daughter. Sarah and Norman had two sons, Barry and Ron, for whom she was a guiding light with sharp intelligence, a keen interest in business, and a no-nonsense attitude.

Sarah and Norman were among founding members of Jewish congregation Temple Adat Shalom in suburban San Diego. Sarah was active in ORT, an organization promoting education and vocational training in the community. She was an avid player of Rummikub (with a steep 25 cent ante per hand requirement) until her final days, and also enjoyed Mah Jong, canasta, golf, traveling around the world, good food (especially chocolate), and making memories.

Sarah’s family was her world. As a parent, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she was a source of endless joy, her love and support a steady presence. She celebrated each milestone with pride, from the smallest moments of joy, to the most significant achievements. Her devotion to her immediate and extended family was truly unmatched, she was a constant role model, and she leaves behind a legacy of strength and resilience.

Sarah was also a friend to many, always willing to lend an ear or offer support when needed. She always showed a genuine interest in the lives of those she cared about. She took great pride in her appearance, had a great sense of style, and if shopping were a sport she would have been at the top of her game.

Sarah is survived by her children Barry (Rosalie) and Ronald (Kathy) Emanuel; grandchildren Deborah (late Tony Shapiro) Alexander, Todd (Jody) Emanuel, Wendy (Jason) Apple, Ally (Ryan) Engel and Brad (Erica) Emanuel; great grandchildren ranging in age from 3 years to 30 years, Trevor (fiancée Claire), Hayley, Tory, Ty, Jessica, Lindsey, Brendan, Sami, Jacob, Ethan and Olivia; and many other family members and friends who were grateful to know her. Sarah was pre-deceased by her parents Rebecca (Singer) and Benjamin Linsky; sister, Lillian Jalass, and brother, Harry Linsky.
